Wildland-Urban Interface Standards Come to Ross
Posted: December 6th, 2007
At the October Council Meeting, provisions of the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) were discussed. The residential lots that border open space or water district lands are in a WUI zone and are more susceptible to wildland fire loss than those in other areas. The California Building Commission adopted the Wildland-Urban Interface codes in late 2005, the majority of the new requirements take effect in 2008. Ross will consider implementing these ignition-resistant building standards, vegetation management and fire equipment access requirements at an upcoming meeting. Once these standards are incorporated into the Town Planning Code, new home construction and substantial remodel projects occurring in severe fire hazard areas will be required to conform. Because wildfires can spread dramatically, these standards will make our whole community safer.
